2005 Dodge Grand Caravan Hesitates When Accelerating

Question

What would cause my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE engine to pause momentarily when I press on the accelerator to speed up. As soon as the vehicle is supposed to begin to move more quickly there is a delay before it will pick up speed.

I am too broke to take it to a mechanic and have it checked out so if I could fix it myself that would be great. What are some faulty components that would prevent the Grand Caravan to increase speed when I step on the gas?

Check for dirty, worn or incorrectly gapped spark plugs if your 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan is sputtering or jerks when accelerating. Dirty fuel injectors or a faulty ignition coil can cause rpm fluctuations, acceleration problems or make the minivan seem sluggish.

Use this troubleshooting guide if there is a delay in the speed of the vehicle’s engine when stepping on the gas pedal. It is a screenshot of the factory service manual “engine misses on acceleration” for 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan minivans. It is applicable for other models, too.

I am having the same problem but there is only hesitation with light acceleration. But if I step on it the Caravan will get up and go like normal. If I step on it at higher speeds or floor it, there is no hesitation.

The spark plugs seem fine and I checked the gap. What are some other things that could cause acceleration problems?

Does the vehicle want to stall when you depress the accelerator? Aside from faulty fuel injectors, you might want to check the following:

        • Throttle position sensor
        • Vacuum leak
        • Idle air control valve
        • EGR
        • Dirty throttle body
        • Plug wires
        • Dirty air filter

Start with the cheap and simple stuff. Inspect the parts, maybe you might find damage.

Try cleaning the throttle body with STP throttle body cleaner. My Dodge Caravan would pause when stepping on the accelerator when the vehicle was cold. Sometimes it felt like it wanted to stall during take off.

Although sometimes the vehicle also felt like it might stall when coming to a stop. That’s when you know the throttle body is dirty. I cleaned the throttle body and it is about 90% better. It runs so much smoother.
