How to Test Crank Position Sensor Yamaha 200hp

Question

How do I check the performance or reliability of a crank position sensor before buying a new part? My boat motor is experiencing acceleration problems, misfires, rough idle and has difficulty starting. Sometimes the engine stalls or backfires.

I was told this could be a symptom of a bad crank position sensor. My neighbor said the crank sensor monitors the rotational speed of the crankshaft and sends the information to the engine management system as a way to control fuel, timing and other parameters—but how do I test it to determine if it’s good?

My motor is a 2008 Yamaha 200 horsepower V6 2-stroke.
