MerCruiser 4.3L V6 Engine Will Not Crank Over

Question

My MerCruiser MCM 4.3L GM V6 will not crank over in order to start the engine. So basically the crankshaft does not turn the internal combustion engine at all.

Before I pay a mechanic to diagnose the starting problem, what should I check when a MerCruiser 4.3 liter engine won’t turn over and begin to run?

    Engine Will Not Crank Over

These are the basic things you should check if your inboard motor will not crank over and begin operating.

    • Be certain the control shifter lever is not in the neutral position.
    • Be certain the battery charge is not low or damaged. Test it.
    • Be certain the battery terminal cables are not damaged.
    • Be certain the battery terminal cables and all electrical wiring connections are tight and free of corrosion.
    • Check if the starter motor fuse is blown (this only applies to older models with a red wire going to a fuse on the starter terminal).
    • Check for a tripped circuit breaker.
    • Determine if the ignition switch is faulty.
    • Check the slave solenoid.
    • Determine if the neutral starter safety switch is faulty.
    • Bad starter solenoid.
    • Bad starter motor.

Most auto part stores will test the battery for free or you can do it yourself. Bench test the starter if need be.

    NOTE: Sea Ray to MerCruiser cross references are;

    • 4.3L-2 same as MCM 4.3 Liter
    • 4.3L-4 same as MCM 4.3 Liter LX
