Dodge Neon Cranks But Won’t Start

Question

My Dodge Neon SXT 2.0L 4-cylinder cranks but will not turn on. It does sound like the crankshaft turns over too slowly. I am not sure if this means I have a weak battery or the alternator is the problem or both.

When I tried to start the car in the morning it just wouldn’t catch and fire. It has a manual transmission does this mean I can push start the car? The battery has got power because it is activating the interior lights. The headlights switch on too.

My Neighbor said it might be the fuel pump or ignition module might be faulty. Any advice? My vehicle is a 2005 Dodge Neon SXT 4-cyl.

Dodge Neon Cranks But Won’t Start

A lot of Dodge Neon owners face the problem when their car cranks but won’t start. If you are frustrated with a similar problem, here is the nitty-gritty of the most common causes that your motor vehicle might be facing.

    1. Weak or No Spark

When was the last time you installed spark plugs in your Dodge Neon engine? A spark plug has a limited life as some of its particles are lost after every ignition. Subsequently, it causes problems in sparking, and as a result, your car does not start properly because there is not enough spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture. Remove your spark plugs to examine manually and replace them by installing new ones if required.

    2. Insufficient Fuel

Fuel is an essential element to make the Dodge Neon engine running and it is vital to check your gas tank meter if your car is continuously cranking but not starting. If the problem persists, you may have a failing or leaking fuel pressure regulator (FPR) due to which adequate quantity of fuel is not reaching the engine.

A clogged fuel filter can also block the fuel from the ignition. It usually occurs due to intense debris and contamination. Be certain the fuel pump and relay are in good working order. You should be able to hear a buzz sound from the fuel pump when the ignition key is turned to the ON position.

    3. Low Compression

The air and gas are mixed in the cylinder to cause compression. Having low compression is also a reason your automobile cranks but won’t start. The main cause of low compression is the leakage of gas from the valves, or the gasket has cracked due to overuse or overheating.

While identifying any leakages by using a leak-down-tester, you should also check if your camshaft timing belt is properly fitted or not. It may have skipped a notch. In fact, make sure the timing belt is not broken. If the timing belt is broken the engine will sound like a sewing machine when cranking.

    4. Power Supply Problems

The power supply problem is another component that is not letting your Dodge Neon start. The most probable issue may be low battery charging or a completely dead battery. Besides, blown fuses can also cause the starting problem of your car.

There is a starter relay in the car that is powered by the battery. A bad starter relay causes the power supply problem in your car because it is the one that starts the engine on the power supplied by the battery. Also check if you have any blown fuses as they also cause the failure of the electric system.

When you locate the no-start problem. Be certain to update your post so others can gain some insight to what is causing the starting issue.
