Kia Sportage Cranks But Will Not Start

Question

What would cause a Kia Sportage to crank but not start up and begin to run. Last week my Kia was cranking over and starting up just fine. Now it just cranks but it won’t fire. The battery is about 1 month old and the starter is activating and engaging the flywheel. The crankshaft isn’t turning over slow. It sounds nice and health—but the engine will not turn on and start operating. Any ideas of what could be wrong?

My Kia Sportage is a 2011 with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Kia Sportage Cranks But Won’t Start

Nothing is more annoying than a Kia Sportage compact SUV that cranks but fails to start, even after constantly turning the key in the ignition system. The majority of times, the reason behind such a problem is very straightforward to fix. However, if you overlook it for too long, it could produce a much more serious problem with your Kia Sportage engine, which could quickly transform into an expensive solution.

Below are a few common reasons why a Kia Sportage engine cranks but doesn’t start, followed by some troubleshooting tips.

    1. Weak or no spark

Weak or lack of spark can be a reason why your Kia Sportage won’t start. It can occur due to several reasons, such as a defective crank position sensor, a faulty ignition module, bad spark plugs, a flooded engine, or a defect in the ignition circuit.

    2. Insufficient fuel

This might look like a stupid reason but trust us; this is one of the most common reasons behind a cranking Kia that won’t start. In order to function correctly, your car’s engine requires fuel, compression, and a spark. Without fuel, your vehicle will sputter but will certainly not start.

    3. Low compression

As mentioned before, your Sportage engine requires proper compression in order to function properly. Compression problems occur due to a faulty timing belt or chain or an overheated engine. It is advised to use a compression tester to identify the compression in your Kia Sportage has any problem.

    4. Power supply problems

If your Kia Sportage cranks too slow, then there might be an issue with its power supply or battery. Sometimes the battery is low on power, or the terminals’ corrosion might cause some power supply problems.

    Troubleshooting Tips

If your compact SUV starts, but the engine dies in a few seconds, this means that your Kia Sportage has insufficient fuel, but the good thing is that the compression and spark are fine. It is also important to understand that constantly turning the key in the ignition can easily drain the battery or wear out the starter. This is why you must take a break of several minutes after every cranking performed so that the starter can cool down.

When was the last time you serviced the car? Is the check engine light on? Have you inspected the spark plugs. Do you know if you’re even getting spark? Do you have fuel pressure? Are you getting electrical power at the fuel pump? We might need a little more information to help you. Could one of many possibilities like a bad fuel pump, relay or engine crank sensor.
