2005 Toyota Corolla CE 1.8L Hesitates when Accelerating
When my 2005 Toyota Corolla begins to move from a stop it will pause momentarily. It almost feels like it bogs when I step on it but it is just a short delay. It does not hesitate when I try and go faster.
I am not sure where to start troubleshooting. I need to know why my car hesitates when I step on the gas or at least what I should check. There is no check engine light and I do not have an OBD scanner (or whatever you call it), no can I afford one.

If I’m not mistaken most auto part stores do free diagnostic, such as AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts. If you don’t live near a part store, you can troubleshoot it yourself.
In most cases, when a Toyota Corolla shutters when accelerating from a stop it could be one (or more) of the following issues:
1. Spark plugs fouled. Remove the spark plug and look at the color of the electrode. It should be grayish-tan in color. If a lot of black, dry soot is on the insulator tip and electrode it means the spark plug is carbon fouled. Oil on the plug means it is oil-fouled. Be certain the plug is not worn, if it is, replace it. Check the gap and make sure the plug isn’t broken. Btw, the spark plug should be a Denso SK16R11 or a NGK IFR5-A11 with a 0.043 inch gap.
2. Faulty fuel injection component. Possibly a fuel injector is dirty or fuel pump is weak. Dirty fuel injectors can cause the vehicle to run lean, when vaporized fuel mixture has a high proportion of air, it will cause hesitation when accelerating.
3. Check for a loose fuel injector wire harness connector.
4. It could be a faulty ECM or information sensor, but unlikely.
The most common cause for a 2005 Toyota Corolla to hesitate when accelerating are fouled spark plugs. Inspect ALL four plugs and be certain to check the gap with a feeler gauge.
Rough starts, poor acceleration and hesitation is always a symptom of fouled spark plugs. This will fix your hesitation and acceleration problem. It will fix any Toyota Corolla between 2003-3008. It improves spark, poor combustion and improve performance. Plus it’s the right one for your Toyota Corolla.
